SV Werder Bremen SV Werder Bremen is a German association football team from Bremen. It all began in 1899, when a group of sixteen vocational high school students won sports equipment. This was the push they needed to start the club. They decided to name the club after the riverside field they used to play football on, and used the regional German word for 'river peninsula'.
Coming from such humble beginnings, this club has received its fair share of success. They have managed to maintain themselves in the top league of Germany, Bundesliga, winning the championship on four occasions. They have also won the DFB-Pokal six times. In 2004, they set a record in history for winning a double (Bundesliga as well as DFB-Pokal) in the same year. They have also won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1992.
The home colours of the team are green and white. These are worn when playing games at the stadium Weserstadion in Bremer. The team is managed by Thomas Schaaf, who has been doing so since 1999. This makes him the longest serving current coach in the Bundesliga. He is a former football defender, and his entire history in this sport has seen him as being a part of Werder Bremen.
